Here is October's offering in my continuing series of papercraft treasure chests from the Kingdom Hearts 2 video game. It was obvious this month that I had to do the treasure chest from the Halloween Town area of the game! ^^ Halloween Town is based on the world of Tim Burton's movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Right down to the orange and black colors, this angry cat head papercraft looks to be the perfect Halloween decoration. The template for the temperamental kitty is posted on the Universal Nomads blog and was originally created for the 2009 Taipei Toy Festival. Universal Nomads describes themselves as "a loose knit band of unruly designers and dimension painters, now banned in 7 of 10 liveable planes of reality". ^^
For my Halloween papercraft project this year I decided to do a series of video game skulls. The first one up is a skull from the Half-Life 1 video game. This skull can be seen at various places in the game as you proceed from one level to another. I tried to size the skull to be 1:1 scale, but as I am no anatomy expert, the size is at best an approximation. The five piece template for the skull may be downloaded here. Look for more paper model skulls in the coming weeks with the series running well past Halloween.
Here is a little something I put together for the 2010 Halloween season. This 3D papercraft diorama was originally printed on the back of the 1973 Halloween edition of DC Comics' House of Mystery comic book. Scans of the diorama parts were posted on The Haunted Closet blog. I downloaded the scans, scaled them, and put them in PDF format to make the table top diorama easier to print and build. The foreground of the diorama shows Cain (the host of the comic book) and his pet gargoyle, Gregory. In the background are some grave diggers and the House of Mystery itself. The style of the artwork may look familiar as it was done by well known comic artist Sergio Aragones of Mad Magazine and Groo the Wanderer fame. It is getting close to Halloween which means it's time for some spooky papercraft! These simple coffin treat boxes are offered by the folks at holiday-crafts-and-creations.com. There are two different templates for the coffin lid, one with a "death by chocolate" slogan and one without. Also included are instructions on how to make skeleton brownie treats to go inside! Halloween is past, but since it is still candy corn season I couldn't pass up posting this cute papercraft. :) This is a glue-less gift box that is held together only by a ribbon at the top. I think it would be cool to put some real candy corn inside some of these boxes and give them away on Thanksgiving Day tomorrow (Happy Thanksgiving! BTW). This candy corn box was created by deviatART user "Soupcomplex". The template is located here.
Apparently the real life Frankenstein Castle near Darmstadt, Germany now houses a restaurant and dinner theater! As part of the restaurant's 2009 Halloween festivities they are offering on their website a nicely done, printable 3D Frankenstein monster mask (kind of looks like Boris Karloff doesn't it?). Here is my contribution to the collection of free Halloween papercraft on the Internet this year: a guillotine! I had downloaded a 3D model of a bloody guillotine by designer "Smirnoffka" earlier this year thinking I might do a papercraft of it sometime and finally decided it would work best as a Halloween papercraft. I chose to scale the guillotine to the size of a Barbie doll because there was something just so ironic and disturbing about associating smiling Barbie with a gruesome instrument of death. :) Here are the details of the template: 
If you ever need a quick Chthulhu mask, :) this may be just the thing for you. Print, cut out, and you are ready to go. The ever popular Chthulhu is a horrific cosmic being originally created by writer H. P. Lovecraft. This particular mask was created by artist David Galvan for Halloween 2007. Looking closely, it appears that the mask was created from photographs of actual tentacles and scales. Downloads of the mask in either jpg or pdf format are available here. 
This past Halloween I pieced together a tabletop graveyard decoration from several free paper models available on the internet. The miniature ghost, zombie and werewolf figures in the graveyard are from a customizable game called Heroscape. The scale of the graveyard is roughly 1:58 (28mm) with the finished scene being about 8" (20cm) by 10" (25cm) and 5 1/2" (13cm) tall. Models included in the scene are:
